Story Behind Steve Perry's Return to the Stage

By Hildi Brooks

After reading about how Steve Perry's return to the stage (Sunday, May 25) came to seems to me Steve has missed it as much as we have missed him. He's 65 now and the songs he sang required massive vocal power and high notes. That's no easy feat when you're in your 20s, let alone your 60s! Plus the pressure... That is what you call a Rock Star.

The story is that Steve Perry is a fan of The Eels. He has been going to their shows for a few years and frontman "E" was aware of that but after finally meeting him, they struck up a friendship. Steve would go to Eels rehearsals and they would try to tempt him into singing with them by playing Journey songs but he never did...then until 3 or 4 years ago.

Since then, the band has been working with him with the hope that he'd one day take the stage again. When they brought the idea up to him, he'd say, "Nah, too much pressure."

E said this year they knew it was different because the second day he showed up to their rehearsal, he was carrying his own microphone.

What are Steve Perry's future plans? E said, "Steve does what Steve does and you either go along for the ride or you don't. I would love to do it again because it was such a fun experience, and I hope he will, but I totally understand if he doesn't. It's all up to him. I'm at least glad it happened this one time...I don't know where it's going to stop."
