5 detained after toddler critically injured in Des Moines shooting, police say

DES MOINES — Police in Iowa are investigating after a 2-year-old was critically hurt in a shooting in Des Moines, authorities said.

According to WHO and KCCI, the incident occurred shortly before 11 p.m. Monday at a home near 13th Street and Jefferson Avenue. In a news release, Des Moines police said at least “a dozen shots were fired into the home, with one striking the child.”

Emergency crews rushed the toddler to a nearby hospital, where the child is being treated for critical injuries, the release said.

Shortly after 12:30 a.m. Tuesday, the Iowa State Patrol discovered a vehicle that had crashed off Interstate 80 in Dallas County, according to the release.

“Observations at the scene indicated a potential connection to the shooting incident, and Des Moines Police Department officers responded to that location,” the release said.

Authorities said they have detained five individuals and recovered two firearms in connection with the shooting, according to the release. No further information was immediately available.
