PINE BLUFF, Ark. — A 15-year-old Arkansas boy is in serious condition after being shot at Watson Chapel Junior High School in Pine Bluff on Monday.

Another 15-year-old boy was taken into custody shortly after the shooting, but neither Watson Chapel student has been identified.

According to police, the students were classmates, and they do not believe the shooting was random, KATV reported.

Pine Bluff Police Chief Kelvin Sergeant told the TV station that the shooting occurred at around 10 a.m. inside the school while students were changing classes, but a motive has not yet been determined.

According to KLRT, police arrived at the school three minutes after receiving the call.

A statement issued early Monday afternoon by a spokesperson for Pine Bluff police erroneously stated that the victim, who had been airlifted to Arkansas Children’s Hospital, had died. Police rescinded the statement about an hour later, citing the release of “bad information,” KLRT reported.

The suspect, whom a dog team with the Arkansas Department of Corrections found hiding behind a house near the school, has been taken to the Jack Jones Juvenile Detention Center in Pine Bluff while charges are filed. Officials have not indicated if he will be tried as an adult, the station reported.
