Long Island school bus driver with children on board accused of DWI

HEMPSTEAD, N.Y. — A New York woman is accused of driving a school bus full of children while intoxicated, authorities said.

Mercedes Parada, 29, of Hempstead, was charged with driving while intoxicated, aggravated driving while intoxicated with a child under 15 aboard, and endangering the welfare of a child, WNBC reported.

According to the Nassau County Police Department, Parada was found slumped over the steering wheel of the bus shortly before 5 p.m. EDT in Hempstead, WCBS reported.

All of the children were accounted for and safely released to their parents, according to WPIX. Police did not identify the ages or grade levels of the children on the bus, the television station reported.

According to an arrest affidavit, officers observed “multiple clues indicating the presence of alcohol” and later determined Parada was intoxicated, WNBC reported.

Parada was arraigned Tuesday at First District Court in Hempstead, WPIX reported.

Police said on Wednesday that their investigation was ongoing, the television station reported.
