SAN FRANCISCO — San Francisco authorities have arrested a man in connection with the Tuesday evening stabbing of two elderly Asian women who were waiting for a downtown bus.
Patrick Thompson, 54, has been charged with two counts each of attempted murder and elder abuse in the unprovoked attack, KPIX reported.
The attack comes amid a rash of anti-Asian violence nationwide since the start of the coronavirus pandemic.
According to KABC, 84-year-old Chui Fong Eng and another 63-year-old woman were stabbed while waiting at the bus stop near Fourth and Stockton streets along Market Street.
“I was told the knife nicked her lung and ribcage. It was a really long knife,” Chui Fong Eng’s grandson told the outlet, noting that her extensive injuries required a more than four-hour surgery.
Both women remained hospitalized Thursday, but both are expected to recover, KABC reported.
According to a law enforcement source, Thompson, who has been placed under a psychiatric hold at least once, has been arrested more than two dozen times in the past 20 years, including a 2019 battery charge, KPIX reported.
Thompson was also arrested for stabbing a person at his homeless shelter with a pair of scissors in 2017, the TV station reported.
