Janet L. Caplinger, 66, of Canton, was arrested Tuesday and charged with two counts of aggravated arson, according to Stark County Jail records.

The home, currently owned by Ellis Michael Healthcare Services, was damaged so badly that it was torn down after it caught fire on Jan. 9, The Repository of Canton reported.

City fire investigators arrested Caplinger, accusing her of setting multiple fires inside the home. The fires “led to significant structural damage and the eventual demolition of the home due to an emergency tear-down ordered by the city of Canton,” according to Stark County court records.

Stark County began foreclosure proceedings against Caplinger in September 2019, according to court records. The home was foreclosed in December 2020 and the health care company bought it, The Repository reported.

Included in the court documents is a letter from Caplinger, dated Dec. 23, 2020, asking, “Would someone please tell me when I have to leave my home? This situation is confusing and terrifying not knowing what to expect next. If you are not the correct agency/office to answer this would you please forward. Thank you!”

Caplinger signed the letter and added her Social Security number, The Repository reported.

Bail was set at $50,000 pending a Canton Municipal Court hearing, according to the newspaper.
