Police said that Johnathon Perkins stole a vehicle from the parking lot of a business in Chalmette, and took off inside it before realizing a child was in the back seat, WDSU reported.

The St. Bernard Parish Sheriff’s Office told NOLA.com that its deputies were able to find the 1-year-old child “alone but unharmed and in good health sitting on the side of the road” on a New Orleans overpass.

The vehicle was later found abandoned on a different overpass with its hazard lights flashing, but without any sign of the suspect, WGNO reported.

Investigators told WDSU that deputies were able to identify Perkins through video surveillance.

Johnathon Perkins was charged with theft of a motor vehicle, second-degree kidnapping, child desertion and illegal possession of stolen property, WDSU reported.
