August 17th, 1991, Nirvana filmed the video for “Smells Like Teen Spirit.” It looks like a deranged pep rally from Anarchy High School. They had actually had a show a couple days before the video filming and they invited a bunch of people from the show to come and be in the video. They release it to MTV, it becomes really popular and catapults the band to stardom.
Today in 1974, Eric Clapton’s “461 Ocean Boulevard” jumps to number one on the album charts. Once they released the single “I Shot the Sheriff”, Eric’s cover of the Bob Marley classic, the album started to sell very well. And the name of the album is actually the address in Florida where Eric Clapton was living when he was working on the album.
And today in 1969, day three of Woodstock, Joe Cocker performs as does Crosby, Stills, Nash, and Young. This is only the second show ever for CSNY. They go out on the stage pretty scared, which seems weird when you think about it because they’re all-season performers having been in other popular bands before that, but they haven’t spent much time performing together, obviously, by the fact that this is only the second day of their show.
