Its always interesting to learn something new about a song you’ve loved and known for literally decades. That’s what happened to me over the weekend. I learned that Heart’s mega-smash ballad Alone, isn’t a Heart song at all. It was written by Tom Kelly and Billy Steinberg, who formed a band in the 80′s called i-Ten. And even though Toto’s Steve Lukather produced their first record, Taking A Cold Look that was released in 1983, it didn’t get noticed at all. Fast forward 4 years and the pair were now working as song writers, who were super hot at the time and had credits like Madonna’s Like A Virgin and Cyndi Lauper’s True Colors. Now they happened to be trying to help Heart find a power ballad, and Tom Kelly suggested Alone, despite Billy’s reservations. In the end they finally re-recorded it with a little extra oomph and sent it to the band, who, obviously, blew the doors off the sucker, and the rest is 80′s power ballad history.

Check out the not too far off original version.

And, of course, here’s Heart’s take on it.
