Sadly we lost Tom Petty on October 2nd, 2017, shortly after his 40th anniversary tour with The Heartbreakers. This live version of American Girl was recorded at the Fillmore in 1997, and is being used with a brand new video that also features Tom’s granddaughter, Everly.
As posted on with the video: “We have partnered with META to share an exclusive of the alternative version of the new “American Girl” Music Video directed by Adria Petty and Jacques Naudé, starring Maya Taylor and edited by Eric Argiro. This video is an effort to realize Tom’s vision of diversity for this iconic song.
“In 2017 Tom changed his tour visuals to reflect a wide range of women and genders when he played ‘American Girl’. We are excited to carry on his wishes and continue his efforts to include representation and diversity in the visuals representing ‘American Girl’ as was his passionately expressed desire in the months before his death.”
This exclusive “Editor’s Favorite” Cut of “American Girl” is now live, exclusively on the official Tom Petty Facebook page and features an alternate opening sequence and more never-before-seen 16mm footage of the original Fillmore run in the credits, as well as a cameo from Tom’s granddaughter Everly.”
Tom’s historic 20 night sold out run at the Fillmore is also a 6 LP or 4 CD box set with 72 songs from those 20 shows.
