This is a story about how easy it is to trick people on the internet. There’s a video that’s been passing around the web for years now claiming that a giant 9 meter (almost 30 feet) long crocodile is just living its best life in a lake in Maine. Here’s one of the posts with the video:

2 things should immediately stand out to the average viewer: 1) if that was really an enormous “man-eating” crocodile you can be sure there wouldn’t be any people swimming with it! I mean it says in the title its a man-eater, and those scuba divers swimming along side and “petting” the croc would have been lunch by now. And 2) crocs don’t live in Maine! The lakes freeze, for one. And Crocs are cold-blooded and wouldn’t survive the winters in the cold of Maine.

This video is from the movie Lake Placid that featured an enormous crocodile, and Betty White! You can see a video of film makers creating the fake croc below.

So keep sharing fun viral videos because we all love them, but also don’t get fooled by ridiculous lies because a little critical thinking can save the day.
